The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, is launching a new resource to join our roster of election data products. Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 will follow gender implications in campaign finance, from donor and recipient perspectives, throughout the 2024 election season. This is the first Women, Money, and Politics Series project to analyze gender and fundraising during a live election cycle.
We begin our phased rollout with part one of our fundraising-tracking, The State View: A Deep Dive into 10 States, which introduces our 10 key focus states, most of which are battlegrounds and represent different regions and partisan dynamics, and provide campaign finance data on fundraising recipients in congressional races in those states (displaying campaign finance data available through January 31, 2024). This page tracks averages of amounts raised from individual donors, self-financing, and small-dollar contributions with comparisons between men and women candidates, partisan disparities, and the data is filterable by women’s race and ethnicity.
“Our research on money and politics has shown consistent disparities in campaign finance, particularly in the donor gap between men and women,” said lead author and CAWP Senior Scholar Kira Sanbonmatsu, “and now we’re able to follow that data as it develops. This is a huge undertaking and allows us to tell this story as it’s being written.”
“We'll be watching to see if women are expressing their political voices through their donations in this important election,” Sanbonmatsu continued. “We'll also be following the money race to see if women have the resources they need to run successful campaigns.”
Throughout the election cycle, CAWP will launch additional resources in Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024. Still to come:
- An exploration of donor demographics – the donor gap – in congressional races in our key states.
- Fundraising recipient data in state elections in several of our key states.
- An expansion of our recipient data on congressional races in all 50 states.
- Fundraising recipient data in state level elections in remaining key states.
- Donor gap data in congressional races in all 50 states and state races in our key states.
These various data collections will update throughout election 2024 as data becomes available and is incorporated into the analysis. The data in Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 is presented using interactive data visualizations powered by Graphicacy.
Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 is part of the CAWP Women, Money, and Politics series, undertaken in collaboration with OpenSecrets; previous reports in the series can be found here. This research is made possible thanks to the generosity and commitment of Pivotal Ventures, a Melinda French Gates company. Follow Women, Money, & Politics Watch 2024 as it develops at the project landing page and find all CAWP data about women in election 2024 at Election Watch.
