Black Women in American Politics 2025
CAWP’s education and outreach programs translate research findings into action, addressing women’s underrepresentation in political leadership with effective, intersectional, and imaginative programs serving a variety of audiences.
CAWP data collections track women's representation at the federal, statewide elective executive, state legislative, and local levels. These resources allow for comparisons between states and parties and track changes in women's political power over time. The CAWP Women Elected Officials Database contains entries for every woman elected to the federal executive, Congress, statewide executive office, and state legislatures going back to 1893.
Our mission is to promote greater knowledge and understanding about the role of women in American politics, enhance women's influence in public life, and expand the diversity of women in politics and government.
While CAWP’s mission and focus is national we are proud to be part of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and pleased to have a component of our work which focuses on our home state including research, data collection and programs.
These programs come to life through in person and virtual convenings, where we aim to help train the next generation of leaders, and give them the tools they need to run for elected office.
