Only two U.S. House seats in California are considered to be competitive: CA-22 and CA-48. They are rated “Toss Up Republican” by The Cook Political Report. Only one woman reported campaign finance data in CA-22, Democrat Jasmeet Bains, who has raised $521,209. Randy Villegas, also a Democrat, has raised the most with $827,279 followed by David Valadao with $774,633.
A large field of Democrats are challenging Republican Representative Darrell Issa in CA-48. Brandon Riker (D) leads the money race of the nonincumbent candidates with over $1.5M raised. Of the four Democratic women in the race, Marni Von Wilpert has raised the most with $477,323.
Six U.S. House seats are open: CA-1, CA-6, CA-11, CA-14, CA-26, and CA-38. All are considered solidly Democratic by The Cook Political Report. CA-11 is the seat of former Speaker of the U.S. House, Representative Nancy Pelosi, who is retiring. In that race, only one woman reported campaign finance data, Connie Chan (D), with $167,084. Scott Wiener (D) leads the money race for all open-seat contests with nearly $2.7M. No women reported campaign finance data in CA-26, but Hilda Solis (D) has raised the most in CA-38 with $362,244.
In CA-6, an open seat considered solidly Democratic by The Cook Political Report, Thien Ho (D) leads the money race with $372,199. Of the women candidates in that race, Lauren Babb Tomlinson (D) has raised the most with $130,173.
Across the open-seat races, the average raised by Democratic men candidates ($472,754) exceeds the average raised by Democratic women candidates ($204,769).
Twelve Democratic women and only one Republican (Representative Young Kim, CA-40) are seeking reelection to the U.S. House from California. Kim is also competing against Representative Ken Calvert, who is now in the same district. He has raised nearly $1.6M.
Of all the women seeking reelection, Kim has raised the most with nearly $3.7M, with 41% of her funds taking the form of small contributions. Representative Ro Khanna (CA-17), a Democrat, has raised the most of all California incumbents with over $9M.
Democrat Esther Kim Varet, who is challenging Representative Kim in CA-40, has raised over $2.3M with about 43% from small contributions. About one-quarter of her funds are from self-financing.
In challenger races, the average proportion of funds from self-financing is highest for Republican men: 25%. In open-seat races, Democratic men have a higher average proportion of funds from self-financing than Democratic women.
