Women's Political Power Map

New Leaders Council (NLC) was formed in 2005 to train and support the next generation of progressive political entrepreneursyoung professionals in their twenties and thirties who are leading industries, setting trends, and building institutions that support robust civic and political life in a global America. NLC accomplishes this mission primarily through the NLC Institute - a political entrepreneurship training program held 10 days over a five-month period that builds local teams of young professionals in 19 cities across the nation. NLC Fellows learn entrepreneurship, leadership, and political management skills from over volunteer faculty from relevant industries. Fellows are also paired with career mentors, join a national alumni network, and agree to fundraise to support the next class of Fellows.

Center for American Women and Politics, Rutgers University

NEW Leadership^® is a week-long residential institute designed to empower college women to become involved in the political process. Participants interact with women from a variety of political and policy-making positions to develop their own concepts of leadership and learn about the roles and representation of women in politics and policy-making in the region.  The NEW Leadership Development Network currently includes 18 programs throughout the country.

School of Public Service, Boise State University

NEW Leadership^® Idaho is a 6-day summer institute that brings together 24-32 college students from across the state to learn about women’s leadership and civic participation through the learned experiences of some of Idaho’s most recognized and accomplished women leaders.  

Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois, Chicago and Conference of Women Legislators

The NEW Leadership^® summer institute is an intensive residential program that educates college women about politics and policy making and inspires them to get involved in the political process. During the six-day program selected students meet with women in a variety of roles in the public sphere, learn about women's political participation, explore ideas about leadership and politics, and participate in hands-on skills building exercises. NEW Leadership^® Illinois is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center

NEW Leadership^® Maine is a six-day, non-partisan residential training program provided at no cost to undergraduate college women throughout the state of Maine. The program educates participants about politics and policy making and inspires them to get involved in the political process. During the six-day program selected students meet with women in a variety of roles in the public sphere, learn about women's political participation, explore ideas about leadership and politics, and participate in hands-on skills building exercises. NEW Leadership^® Maine is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Mike and Maureen Mansfield Center, University of Montana

Montana NEW Leadership is a program hosted by the University of Montana’s Mansfield Center to educate, empower, and encourage college women to become politically active and to take on leadership roles. We are looking for applicants who are not necessarily in political science, but who have passion for any social issue(s). 

Women's Research Institute, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

NEW Leadership^® Nevada is a six-day summer institute that brings together 25 college students from across the state to learn about women's leadership and civic participation from accomplished women leaders. Students meet formally and informally with these leaders through a series of panels, lectures, and interactive workshops and create lasting networks and mentoring relationships.  Graduates are supported throughout their future endeavors by WRIN, the group's growing alumnae network, and their community partners.  NEW Leadership^® Nevada is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Center for American Women and Politics

NEW Leadership™ New Jersey is a residential summer institute designed to empower about 35 college women each year to become involved in the political process. Participants interact with women from a variety of political and policy-making positions to develop their own concepts of leadership and learn about the roles and representation of women in politics and policy-making in the region.  NEW Leadership™ New Jersey is the flagship program of the NEW Leadership™ Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics, a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Center for Women in Government and Civil Society

The NEW Leadership^® New York is an intensive residential program that educates college women about politics and policy making and inspires them to get involved in the political process. During the six-day program selected students meet with women in a variety of roles in the public sphere, learn about women's political participation, explore ideas about leadership and politics, and participate in hands-on skills building exercises. NEW Leadership^® New York is part of the NEW Leadership™ Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University (NJ).

Women's and Gender Studies Department, Saint Mary's College of California

The NEW (New Education for Women's) Leadership program addresses those questions directly, teaching undergraduate women how to become actively involved in politics, advocacy, and public service. The Women's and Gender Studies at Saint Mary's College will host the first California NEW Leadership Summer Institute in 2024.

John Glenn College of Public Policy, Ohio State University

NEW Leadership^® Ohio is a week long residential summer institute that educates women college students and inspires them to get involved in the political process.  During the program selected students meet with women in a variety of roles in the public sphere, learn about women's political participation, explore ideas about leadership and politics, and participate in hands-on skills building exercises. NEW Leadership^® Ohio is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Center for Women's Leadership, Hatfield School of Government, Portland State University

NEW Leadership^® Oregon is the women's leadership development program housed at the Center for Women, Politics & Policy at Portland State University. Open to college women enrolled at any college in the state of Oregon, NEW Leadership^® Oregon's intensive, six-day, residential leadership training program is specifically designed to introduce Oregon's college women to opportunities for public leadership. By participating, college women find out why and how to get involved in politics through interaction with Oregon's past and present women officeholders, candidates, policy specialists, and activists.  NEW Leadership™ Oregon is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University

NEW Leadership^® Pennsylvania is an intensive, week-long, residential leadership and public policy institute designed to educate and empower young women for future political participation and leadership. The program addresses the under-representation of women in the political arena by focusing on the role of women in politics and policy making in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. NEW Leadership^® Pennsylvania is part of the NEW Leadership^® Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Winthrop University/College of Charleston/Coastal Carolina University

NEW Leadership^® South Carolina is a residential program that gives college women the knowledge and skills to become effective leaders in politics, public policy and public service. During the four-and-a-half-day Institute, participants will meet women leaders, learn about women in American politics, and develop and practice leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops, and hands-on projects. After the Summer Institute, participants are encouraged to continue to develop public leadership skills and become involved in community affairs. 

Gender and Policy (GAP) Center, Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University

NEW Leadership® Virginia is a non-partisan, six-day residential summer program that brings together undergraduate students and women leaders in public service.
